The heat has broken in the northwest this week, but many folks are cleaning up after the cold front went through with some violent weather. Some bird species are continuing to gather, others are already arriving from the north, and some are still feeding young.

From Grant County, Charlene Nelson reported many BALTIMORE ORIOLES  at the feeders this week, and a few returning migrant warblers are returning. She reported NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, NASHVILLE WARBLER, and CONNECTICUT WARBLER  on August 19.

In Alexandria in Douglas County, Charlene saw a COMMON NIGHTHAWK  fly over the city on August 15.

Sandy Aubol in Polk County reported WILSON’S WARBLER and TENNESSEE WARBLER  in East Grand Forks on August 16. At the East Grand Forks WTP, she reported many EARED GREBES  with young of all sizes and several RED-NECKED PHALAROPES. On August 17, she observed CANADA WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, WILSON’S WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, WARBLING VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE  in East Grand Forks. On August 20 she saw BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER. Emily Hutchins and Christine Herwig found a variety of ducks including BUFFLEHEAD, FRANKLIN’S GULLS, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, KILLDEER, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, and CEDAR WAXWING  among others at the Erskine WTP on August 16.

At the Thief River Falls WTP in Pennington County, Emily Hutchins and Christine Herwig found EARED GREBES, and BLACK TERNS among other species.
