Minnesota Birding Report

This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Wednesday, June 19, 2013 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Summer has surely arrived, and as if a switch has been shut off, the migration seems over except for those stragglers that were somehow delayed along the way.

Surely the best sighting of the week was the LONG-TAILED JAEGER found in the Roseau lake bed in Roseau County on June 14. The bird was found along CR 123 on a patch of gravel road between two flooded areas. Access can be obtained only from the north by taking MN 89 north from MN 11 and turning east on CR 118, following it until it turns south on CR 123. The bird was still there later that day, but I have no report on whether it is still there.

Beau Shroyer found a WHIP-POOR-WILL in the Paul Bunyan State Forest in Hubbard County on June 13. He also saw a MOURNING WARBLER singing on territory and a YELLOW WARBLER on a nest.

In Clay County, Scott Meyer was a Felton Prairie on June 18 where he saw three CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS, MARBLED GODWIT, many UPLAND SANDPIPERS, HORNED LARKS, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, VESPER SPARROWS, BOBOLINKS, and WESTERN MEADOWLARKS. On June 16, Josh Wallestad saw two LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES at the east end of CR 108.

Lucas Abrahamson southwest of Holt in Marshall County discovered how strongly MARBLED GODWITS will defend their territory from all comers, when no less than five appeared to scream at him when he went to the field to train his hunting dog on June 17. The next day, only two of the godwits were there, but they kept a close watch on the man and the dog.

Thanks to Andrew Nyhus, Beau Shroyer, Josh Wallestad, Lucas Abrahamson, and Scott Meyer for their reports.
