MN Fishing Opener in Otter Tail County

The MN fishing opener usually corresponds with Mother’s Day. To keep the peace in fishing families, our state legislature passed the “Take a Mom Fishing Weekend” law in 1989, allowing Minnesota mothers to fish without a license on opening weekend. The MN fishing opener is a strong tradition in Otter Tail County, with many families hitting the lakes, rivers and streams at midnight.

This year’s Official Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener was originally slated to be held May 7-10 in Otter Tail County, but has been postponed to 2021 to help reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus. East Silent Lake Resort was excited to be part of that special event. Despite the Fishing Opener event postponement, the 2020 fishing season will still open on May 9th. We’d love to host your special weekend with mom.
