For many families, the dream of owning a place at the lake is easy to imagine — but harder to make practical. Between the cost of purchasing a full lake home and the time required to maintain it, the dream can feel just out of reach.
For the Sohre family from Sioux Falls, the path to ownership at East Silent Lake Resort began the same way it does for many guests: with a family vacation.
“When our kids were little, we started vacationing at East Silent,” the Sohres shared. “It quickly became a place where everyone relaxed, reconnected, and made memories together.”
Like many families who visit year after year, lake week soon became a highlight of the summer. And like many children who fall in love with lake life, their kids had a simple reaction when it was time to leave.
“The kids were heartbroken every time we had to go home.”
That moment helped the family realize just how special the place had become.
“We had always dreamed of having a place at the lake,” they said. “But owning a full lake home felt out of reach — both financially and in terms of the time and upkeep it would require.”
Fractional ownership at East Silent offered something different.
“Ownership here gave us the feeling of having our own lake place without the burden of maintaining a second home,” the Sohres explained. “It was the perfect balance.”

A Week That Means Everything
Ask the Sohre family what their time at the lake means to them and the answer comes quickly.
“In one word: memories.”
Looking back through family photos tells the story best. Their children first arrived at East Silent when they were just three and five years old — learning to swim, exploring the shoreline, and proudly showing off their first fish.
Now they arrive as teenagers.
“Last summer they were 15 and 17, excited to bring friends up and show them what East Silent is like,” the Sohres said.
Those weeks at the lake have become something much bigger than a vacation.
“Our week at the lake is about family and friends,” they said. “It’s time together away from all the demands of day-to-day life.”
And it’s about slowing down.
“It’s about taking off the watch, putting away the phone, and enjoying simple things — like a peaceful boat ride while listening to the loons and watching the sunset.”
When they look back over the years, the memories feel endless.
“We could fill pages with all the memories we’ve made at East Silent,” they said. “And we look forward to making more every year.”

A Place That Feels Like Home
One of the biggest surprises after becoming owners was just how quickly East Silent began to feel like their own place.
“It feels like home every time we turn into the tree-lined lane and walk through the door,” the Sohres said.
Another surprise was discovering how much they enjoy the resort beyond just the peak summer weeks.
“We realized how much we love East Silent in every season,” they shared.
One of their favorite memories came during a winter visit to the resort.
“It was beautiful, relaxing, and fun in its own unique way.”
No matter the time of year, their family has always found something new to enjoy together.
“It’s been wonderful watching our kids grow up here,” they said.

Advice for Families Considering Ownership
For families who may be thinking about lake ownership but aren’t sure if fractional ownership is right for them, the Sohres offer simple advice.
“If you’re considering it, don’t overthink it — go for it.”
Looking back, there’s really only one regret.
“The only regret we have is not doing it sooner.”
Ownership at East Silent has given their family something far more valuable than a traditional cabin — years of connection, relaxation, and shared experiences.
“It’s been one of the best decisions we’ve made,” the Sohres said.
